2022 Loon Count

Aug 26, 2022

We are pleased to report the loon count this summer showed an increase in China Lake’s loon population. In July 2022, 36 adult loons were seen on China Lake. This is an increase from the 25 adult loons counted in 2021 and 2020 and is now close to our average of 37 loons. No Chicks were seen during the count although during the summer 6 chicks were reported.

China Lake has been participating in the statewide count, coordinated by the Maine Audubon Society, on the third Saturday of every July since 1984.

China Lake is divided into 7 count areas and every year we need new counters. Contact Bob O'Connor, China Lake Loon Count Coordinator, at (207) 445-4140 if you are interested in volunteering for the Loon count.
