Cleaner Water, Stronger Shores: China Lake Phase III Results

Dec 13, 2025

The China Lake Phase III Watershed Restoration Project focused on reducing polluted runoff entering China Lake by installing Best Management Practices (BMPs) at high- and medium-impact sites, while expanding education, outreach, and shoreline stewardship throughout the watershed.

Between 2023–2025, project partners:

  • Visited 47 residential properties and completed BMP installations at priority sites

  • Completed 5 residential projects

  • Completed 10 non-residential projects, including beaches, roads, community facilities, and conservation lands

  • Exceeded required matching funds, generating over $110,000 in match

  • Installed erosion control features that reduce sediment and nutrient runoff

  • Engaged landowners through buffer workshops, gravel road education, and volunteer-led buffer bundle programs

  • Distributed 556 native plants to 50 shoreline properties, strengthening natural lake buffers

Education and outreach were a major component of Phase III, with workshops, press releases, technical assistance, and community events that helped residents understand how small property improvements make a big difference for lake health.

Phase III concludes with strong momentum toward a possible Phase IV to continue collaboration across the China Lake watershed.

Residential Projects

High- and medium-impact residential sites received targeted improvements to stabilize soils, redirect runoff, and protect shorelines.
