Loon Count & Bob O'Connor's 34 yrs. with CLA Come to a Close

Jun 10, 2023

Loon Count

In 2022, 36 adult loons were seen on China Lake. This was an increase from the 25 adult loons counted in 2021 and 2020 and is close to the average of 37 loons. Although no chicks were seen during the count, 6 chicks were reported throughout the summer.

China Lake participates annually in the statewide count, coordinated by Maine Audubon. To volunteer for this year's Count happening Saturday, July 15, from 7-7:30 a.m., contact our new Loon Coordinaor, Bill Powell, at looncount@chinalakeassociation.org.

Hey there, Loon Lovers dear,

After 34 incredible years

China Lake loon count's in new hands

No time for tears, just exciting plans

Bill Powell, a passionate soul

Now the Coordinator, taking control We met, exchanged goals galore Wisdom and advice, a treasure to explore

For years, I led the way Since '90, bold and gray

Counting loons in earlier days Love for them never fades away

As time flies, I'm still devoted To the loons, my heart is devoted

Their haunting calls, day and night

Fill me with joy, an endless delight

This year, 2023, I'll lend a hand

Helping Bill in his loon count land

Together we'll make it grand

A united team, a loon-loving band

So let's raise our spirits high

With laughter, cheer, and joy nearby

Bill embraces his new role, oh my

While the loons sing, loud and spry!

Bob O'Connor
